As expecting moms, we all envision the perfect breastfeeding scenario. Mine went something like this….I would latch my baby to the breast while peacefully cradling her. She would nurse and then adorably fall asleep in my arms. Eat, sleep, repeat…
Unfortunately, that’s not quite how my breastfeeding journey started. Cue the sore nipples, engorged breasts and slow weight gain for my baby. Ugh….what about the peacefulness? It came, eventually! But looking back, I wish I would have been more prepared. I wasn’t an IBCLC back then, but I WAS an experienced postpartum/L&D RN and a women’s health nurse practitioner. I’d been helping moms with breastfeeding for years but didn’t even THINK to take the time to educate myself. Boy was that a mistake!
One thing I learned through that experience is that no one is going to magically show up when your baby is born and teach you how to breastfeed. It’s up to you to educate yourself now and to find the resources that will support you when you need it. Take my advice and add breastfeeding prep to your to-do list. You’ll be glad that you did!
